This is the first I think I’ve talked about the latest novel I’ve written. So let’s get to the Q&A
1) What is the working title of your next book?
2) Where did the idea come from for the book?
This is a sequel to my first novel, Smooth Running…which is very late getting into Amazon.com. So, let me talk about this as a sequel and for the series in itself.
I cut my teeth on two genres growing up: Cyberpunk (especially Walter Jon William’s Hardwired) and High Fantasy. I always wanted to combine the two, I even had a D&D elf who carried a revolver. (Yes, I’m aware that makes me a huge geek). Later, in my 20’s, there was a lot of talk about 2012 being the end of the world. So I liked to combine that idea with the concept of traditional, high magic coming back and bringing with it all these characters and races from Tolkien and traditional Western Fantasy. The same idea also cropped up in the role playing game, Shadowrun. I have read the Shadowrun books, though not recently.
For Smooth Vengeance, I wanted to continue the story I started in Smooth Running but I wanted to explore the idea of Vengeance, it’s costs and what you get out of it. Too often you hear people,, especially in bad movies saying: You know killing (x) won’t bring (them) back. Well, of course not. That’s not the point of revenge. Revenge is to put the dead to rest and to resolve the internal sense of injustice, at least for certain type of people, like Smooth Charles.
3) What genre does your book fall under?
I used to call it ‘Violent Porn’ but that got weird search results. I’d call it an action-adventure fantasy with high-tech elements. And sex.
4) What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
Smooth Charles: Vin Diesel
Tori: Angie Everheart, back in her prime. Today…maybe Deborah Ann Woll?
Torgo the Great: Jason Momoa, if he’d be willing to do the orc makeup
Ace: Sean Bean, if he can pull off an Ukrainian accent
Eve (name subject to change, female assassin): Melanie Brown, again if she’d be willing to wear some makeup prosthesis
5) What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Gunman has to decide if revenge is worth losing his girl and his reputation.
6) Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
I’m not actively pursuing agents. I plan on self-publishing all the Smooth and Tori novels.
7) How long will it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
Well, the rule of thumb here is to lie about how hard it is and how long it is. Pardon the pun. I did the first 2/3rds way, way faster than most people would believe. The last 3rd was delayed on account of video games.
8) What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Maybe Simon Green’s Deathstalker books? Mercedes Lackey’s Summons to Tourney has a similar feel. I have more guns and more of a post-apocalyptic feel.
9) Who or what inspired you to write this book?
Literally, Tolkien and Walter Jon Williams. In a negative sense, I read some horrible sci-fi fantasy novel back in 2005 and, like so many, I decided I could write better than that.
10) What else about the book might pique the reader’s interest?
Sex and violence. Magic and high technology. An isolated Seattle surrounded by a ten-story wall. Honestly, I hope the characters are what hook people. I wanted to create an iconic protagonist, my Conan, my Druss, my…shudder…Jack Reacher. My goal is to create a badass and have him run around stepping into trouble. I hope I also have some good subtext and inner struggle as well but I didn’t want to write an introspective person who is paralyzed by guilt and indecision. If you like hot sex, realistic and exciting action, you’ll like this book.
