The world did not end December 21st, 2012, but it did change, suddenly and irrevocably. The Earth was renewed and the boundary between this world and the spirit world was ripped asunder. It was a cataclysm that killed millions and made entire cities vanish as if they'd never been. Mana returned to the world, magical power rising from the earth and with it came creatures from legend, myth and from humanities imagination. The people who didn't die or vanish, were changed, sometimes literally. Men and women were changed into Elves and Dwarves. The impossible was suddenly possible.
Just when things were starting to recover, it happened again, December 31st, 2022. A second wave of magic engulfed the world, an aftershock that nearly finished what the first wave had started. More disappearances, more deaths and more changed. This time the changed men and women were twisted, terrifying. City managers became orcs, software developers became trolls. The civilization teetered, a breath away from falling completely. But things held, more or less.
Smooth Running is the story of a modded-up street thug, a 21st century Ronin named Smooth Charles. Smooth Running is also the story of Tori, a rich elf, a dilettante and amateur magician. Together, the two of them will travel the mean, mean streets of a magic-haunted 2052 Seattle. They enter the shadowy world of ‘errand runners’; who do the dirty work, cops, corporations, and crooks don't want to sully their hands with. But they become pawns in someone else's game, and the stakes are life and death.
