Finished the second, read-aloud pass of chapter 22. Not a ton happens, it's a 'farewell' chapter as Balt leaves, told from Jael's POV. But, one thing I did right, is get the pacing right. The chapter does what its supposed to do and stops. It didn't feel like it dragged. I wish Chapters 5 and 6 had paid attention to that.
The next pass, I think I'd want to work more on Jael's conflicting emotions. For a lot of the chapter, she's just observing Jacob. Now, it's fine for her to be worried about Jacob's reaction to Balt leaving and I DO want to show Jacob's reaction to Balt leaving from her, not his, POV. But this is her chapter, it needs to deal with her thoughts and her emotions, not just her observations.
Things are starting to move in the novel. Chapter 23 and 24 should be pretty good, though I think 23 might have a lot of optional stuff that can be trimmed. We'll see tonight.
