I went over chapter 4 again in preparation to posting it to my online critique group. Hopefully it's a little tighter. I actually found something I could cut! That's huge for me. I always prefer my fantasy novels to be immersive. So I don't mind if a book takes its time kicking the plot into gear. (though once the plot starts, I do like it to go somewhere. I'm looking at you, Robert Jordan. I don't care if you are dead.) Other people (more people) seem to differ, so I'm looking at ways to tighten things up.
Anyway, I posted it up. We will see what the group thinks about it. Getting chapter-by-chapter critiques is useful. Fresh eyes see things that I miss. But what I really need is someone to read the whole novel and tell me what works and what doesn't. (the ending chapter, the post-climax, if you will, has me biting my nails.) I'm going to try again to send the whole novel to two of the best writer's I've seen and ask them to read the whole thing. Previously, this hasn't worked. I don't know why, though I suspect the time commitment is part of it, but no one ever seems to finish it and/or tell me what they think.
Sigh. Well, I'll keep trying. Damn if I'm going to give up on this or anything else Angel Odyssey-related. I get to do some WRITING tonight and I'm going jump on that with both hands...though I still owe some critiques to people.
