Well I got turned down by the first editor I tried to hire. Basically, they want to charge $100/hr and I have a budget of $500~750.
I don't even know if you can read a 130,500 word novel in five hours, let alone edit one. So I sort of understand why the editor chose to pass on the project.
On the other hand, I've learned one lesson: don't hire an editor who works by the hour. I have a few other leads for editors that charge by the word, so I'll do a read-through of Smooth Running this weekend and then see if I can hire of them for copy-edit.
I'm curious, though. According to her, she was charging an 'average rate' for editing services* . Is $100/hr really a median rate? And if so, are there really any indy authors out there who have that kind of scratch to drop several grand (at least, at those rates) on editing?
*though she seemed confused about what I was hiring her for. I wanted a copy edit, not a manuscript edit. I don't really want her corrected my sentence structure. They may be flawed but they were deliberately choppy in places.
