I continued on with my 'lean and mean' rewrite last night. I think I'm getting closer to hitting my 10% inciting incident target. I'm also damn near weeping over all the character and world building stuff I'm leaving out. All the (hopefully) graceful 'showing' I did is gone. I don't know. I'll polish it up and submit it for feedback but...
There is stuff here I like. And there is stuff here I'm DYING to take some time to 'show' more. But I guess I need to keep things moving. I'll try to work to fix my areas of concerns. Maybe I can add some grace notes that will make it feel better.
Here's the part that work me out of sound sleep last night: what if this new pacing means I have to re-write every chapter to fit the same feel? I mean, chapter 1 and 2 are about 10k words. Chapters 3,4, 5 and 6 are about 10k combined. Do I need to go back and alter chapter 1 and 2 as well?
Arg. I need to do some more research. Look at some fantasy novels I love and see how they handled this problem. Figure out this structure and pacing problem, since apparently it is a problem. I don't know.
I LIKED the slower paced, immerse story. But I need to consider my audience as well.
