Balt is gone from here on out as well. I keep thinking about ways to keep him in the story or have him pull a Han Solo at the climax but there are a couple of reasons I don't do that.
First, love triangles are fun but they need to be resolved. And not in some lame, Lost* way. This draft, Jael makes a choice, it isn't made for her by time running out. (And yes, choosing not to decide is a choice, thank you Rush fans)
Second, Jacob and Jael need to overcome their obstacles themselves. If they need to be rescued, it weakens them as a characters. Maybe that was ok for Luke Skywalker at the end of Star Wars. Maybe he still was a boy and needed a man to come and save him**. But I want Jacob to face a foe we can't expect to defeat. I want to see him try even when there's no hope. I want to see Jael make a fateful choice and break one final taboo to save Jacob's life.
Well, lets see if we can get one more rite of passage done today.
* (Seriously, what was wrong with the writers on that series?)
** (Yes, there is more at work with that plot point, like Han making a decision but still I think it would have been better if it hadn't been Han saving Luke from Vader.)#avg_ls_inline_popup { position: absolute; z-index: 9999; padding: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px; overflow: hidden; word-wrap: break-word; color: black; font-size: 10px; text-align: left; line-height: 130%; }
