Sorry for the missed post yesterday. I jumped into Angel Odyssey work pretty hard and plumb forgot about it until the end of the day. So that's the good news. They're out of the woods and ready for the next big conflict and this time, it's not emotional. Its the good, life-or-death kind of problem.
Balt is gone from here on out as well. I keep thinking about ways to keep him in the story or have him pull a Han Solo at the climax but there are a couple of reasons I don't do that.
First, love triangles are fun but they need to be resolved. And not in some lame, Lost* way. This draft, Jael makes a choice, it isn't made for her by time running out. (And yes, choosing not to decide is a choice, thank you Rush fans)
Second, Jacob and Jael need to overcome their obstacles themselves. If they need to be rescued, it weakens them as a characters. Maybe that was ok for Luke Skywalker at the end of Star Wars. Maybe he still was a boy and needed a man to come and save him**. But I want Jacob to face a foe we can't expect to defeat. I want to see him try even when there's no hope. I want to see Jael make a fateful choice and break one final taboo to save Jacob's life.
Well, lets see if we can get one more rite of passage done today.
